How Often Should You Have Your House Cleaned?
Weekly, every two weeks, or monthly. Here is how to choose, and what each one actually costs per month.
Every two weeks is the right default for most households, and the one most people land on.
Five things move the answer. People per square foot. Pets. Whether anyone is home during the day. Allergies or asthma in the household. And where you live — a dirt road, a wood stove and altitude all shorten the interval.
Compare monthly cost rather than per-visit price. For a 1,751–2,000 sq ft home that's about $802 a month weekly, $444 every two weeks, and about $271 every four weeks. The frequency changes the monthly total; these averages use 52 weeks per year and recurring rates from visit two.

Five things decide the answer
There is no universally correct interval, but the variables are predictable. Score your own house on these:
- People per square foot. Four people in 1,400 sq ft generate far more work than two people in 2,600.
- Pets. A shedding dog is roughly equivalent to adding a person, and two are worse than double.
- Whether anyone is home all day. Remote work meaningfully increases kitchen and bathroom use.
- Allergies or asthma in the household. This moves the answer more than anything else on the list.
- Where you live. Dirt road, wood stove and high altitude all shorten the interval. We wrote about why in why mountain homes get dusty faster.
Weekly
Right for busy households with kids and pets, and for homes where someone is allergic. Also right for anyone who wants the house consistently presentable rather than cycling between clean and not.
The practical advantage of weekly is that nothing accumulates. Every visit is a maintenance visit, so the work stays light and predictable, and you never get the visit where things have gone backwards.
Every two weeks
The most common choice, and usually the right default. Long enough that the cost is reasonable, short enough that the house never drifts far from baseline.
Two weeks is roughly the point at which bathrooms start to need real work rather than maintenance, which is why the interval holds up well for most households.
Every four weeks
Works well for one or two people, no pets, low traffic, and reasonable tidiness between visits. It works less well in mountain homes during heating season, where four weeks of ash and grit is visible.
If you go monthly and each visit feels like it needs a deep clean, that is your signal. The house wants a shorter interval, not a bigger service.
The monthly cost, honestly compared
People compare per-visit prices, which is the wrong comparison. Here is a 1,751 to 2,000 sq ft home at recurring rates, converted to an approximate monthly spend:
- Weekly at $185 per visit: about $802 per month
- Every two weeks at $205 per visit: about $444 per month
- Every four weeks at $250 per visit: about $271 per month
Note what happens across those rows. The per-visit price barely moves, but the monthly cost changes by nearly four times. Recurring rates are lower per visit precisely because a recently cleaned home takes less work, so the more often you go, the less each visit costs.
Using 52 weeks per year, every-four-week service averages about $271 per month, compared with about $444 for every-two-week service. These are recurring averages from visit two; the first Standard visit is $275. Choose Deep Cleaning at $335 when that scope is needed.
How to actually decide
Start one step more frequent than you think you need, for two months. It is easy to notice you are cleaning more often than you need to. It is much harder to notice you have slowly adjusted to a house that is never quite clean.
Then adjust. There is no long-term contract, and appointment changes follow the normal cancellation terms. Your first visit uses the one-time standard rate for your size, and the recurring rate applies from visit two onward.
If it has been a long time since the last thorough clean, start with a deep clean rather than a standard one and go onto a schedule afterwards.
Common questions
Do recurring prices apply to my first visit?
New recurring clients get their first visit free as a full deep clean. Otherwise the first Standard visit uses the one-time rate for your home size, with the recurring rate applying from visit two onward, because the first visit on a new home usually takes longer.
Can I change frequency later?
Yes. There is no long-term contract required. Normal appointment cancellation terms still apply to individual visits.
Are optional extras discounted on a recurring plan?
No. Extras such as interior windows, detailed blinds or garage sweeping are priced separately and do not receive the recurring frequency discount. Work that is already included in your service is never charged as an extra.
